I was parked on the side of a road so my wife could breastfeed. She quickly let me know she needed water and that I should go get some. I begrudgingly agreed because we were not near any shops that would usually give out water. Across the road was a random skincare company. Now, it’s a good social exposure lifestyle activity to go into a random shop and ask for some water. However, to make matters worse, this store was having their 6th year anniversary and a party. The whole place was filled up with 20-something women all getting ready to celebrate.
The prospect of going into the store full of women, not to join their celebration but to ask for water, was not my favorite thing in the world to do. In fact, I really didn’t want to do it. What happened?
I went in and explained that my wife was breastfeeding and in need of water. And of course, with my British accent it makes me stand out even more because of the way I pronounce “war-teh”. Three of the girls at the front said “that’s so cute”. I got my water and then was invited to stay for the party! Not so bad in the end.
What Did I Learn?
First, the people were super friendly. Second, if I was single this would have been a really good opportunity to hang around and meet someone. In fact, I bet I could have had a good shot at a date! A totally random opportunity that would never have occurred had I not been brave. And third, apparently this random store was willing to give me water that I could use to fill up my water bottle.
Next time you want to avoid some small social interaction, try it out instead. You never know what will happen or who you could meet. And always listen to your partner!
